Make AI text read
naturally for Turnitin.
Turnitin added AI-writing detection to its similarity report in 2023; it now also flags text that has been run through paraphrasers and "humanizers." Here's how it actually works, what its false-positive record looks like, and the honest version of what a humanizer can and can't do about it.
How Turnitin works
Turnitin segments a document and scores each segment on how predictable its word choices and sentence rhythm are to a language model — low "perplexity" and low "burstiness" read as machine-written. It reports a percentage of the document it believes is AI-generated. It does not show its evidence, and it updates its model over time, so the same text can score differently month to month.
False positives
Turnitin has publicly acknowledged false positives, and independent research (Stanford, 2023) found AI detectors disproportionately flag non-native English writers, whose simpler constructions read as low-perplexity. Treat any single score as a signal, not a verdict.
What a rewrite actually looks like
Here's the same paragraph before and after Humanizer — the structure, rhythm, and word choice change, not just a few swapped synonyms. The percentage is Sapling's AI-likelihood estimate, shown on every rewrite. It's a signal, not a guarantee against Turnitin.
AI has become an integral part of modern content creation. With the advent of large language models, the ability to generate high-quality text has been revolutionized, allowing for unprecedented efficiency in writing workflows.
Recent advances in large language models have genuinely reshaped how people write. What used to take days of drafting can now happen in an afternoon — though how much it helps still depends on the field, and we're all figuring out the limits.
